Our plane fell out of the sky - literally - and had to make an emergency landing in Iceland. After multiple delays we got home a day late - and guess what? Tin Leg says this kind of disruption isn't covered. Despite 'Disrupted trip' being the No 1 listed item covered. Avoid this company like the plague.

We found TinLeg as the top rated travel insurance company on Squaremouth.com (a site which frames itself as an independent rating site for travel insurance). TinLeg also happens to be created and owned by Squaremouth which should have been a red flag for us from the start.

We booked a once in a lifetime long stay trip to Portugal that had us arriving on December 11, 2025. We purchased the Gold plan from TinLeg to cover our trip due to the high cost of airfare and accommodations. On December 9th, 2025 United airlines abruptly notified us our flight was cancelled due to a major labor strike in Portugal. We received a full refund instantly from the airlines with the explicit explanation they had to cancel our flight because of the strike and could not rebook our flight in the immediate future. The strike started on December 11th, 2025 and caused massive disruption throughout Europe as the Lisbon airport we were flying into is also a hub for connections in Europe. The initial ground crew strike lasted 24 hours but was followed by train, bus, baggage handler, nurses, teachers, and all manner of labor unions striking on consecutive days that was widely reported in the media as a nationwide major strike in Portugal that hadn't been done on this scale in many years. Everything was disrupted in Portugal for weeks and all the airlines reported massive cancellations and delays over this time.

Our AirBnB hosts decided to keep our $4500 pre-payment and said they had a no refund policy for cancellations regardless of the fact we could not get to Portugal and had our trip cancelled because of the strike. We thought to ourselves "This is the very reason we bought travel insurance" and set about reporting this loss as a claim on our TinLeg Gold Travel Insurance policy.

We diligently reported all the details to TinLeg who very "helpfully" had an initial phone call with us to gather our documentation. We submitted everything to the letter and then waited while they processed our claim. Then came the requests for more information and the hedging when it became clear they were not going to honor our GOLD level policy by claiming the strike that cancelled our flight was only "24 hours" and the policy states the "disruption of strike" is only a covered event if it is "48 consecutive hours". The disruption of the initial strike and all the subsequent strikes were felt nationwide for far more than 48 hours but TinLeg used this language to deny our claim. We appealed the decision and provided even more proof in the form of state department advisories and news reports that clearly stated this was a massive disruption over weeks of labor strikes and outages effecting travel in Portugal. The Portuguese immigration Authority (AIMA) was even found to be in violation of EU law because the customs entry gates were so backed up from the strikes that the poor people who did land in Portugal were stuck waiting in lines for up to 8 hours to clear customs with elderly people passing out where they stood. This has all been well documented in the news. TinLeg has persisted in denying our claim. This company is yet another scammy insurance company that will happily take your money and extend a policy and then use the finest of fine print to deny what is clearly a legitimate claim. I am leaving this review because I use TrustPilot to look up companies and want to offer our experience as a cautionary tale. You can look up this Portugal strike in the news and see the scale and level of disruption and then know that if this isn't "covered" by TinLeg what would be for you?

For anyone reading this just look at all the positive reviews here as “it is so easy to buy a policy with TinLeg” and then flip the filter and read all the many one star reviews as “Tinleg dragged out all the documentation I had to submit and then denied my valid claim while misquoting some fine print definition of travel disruption”. This company makes it easy to take your money and impossible to make a valid claim when you actually need it.
